Feeling fabulous at 40

Suzy Turner

I’ve always been a bit of a poser, but maybe now I can put it to good use!

I’m so excited at the moment because last week I had my photo taken by Ela Models (they’ll be featured on the blog soon so keep an eye out) in order for me to be on their books. YAY! Secretly, I’ve always harboured desires to model but knew I wasn’t quite tall enough, my teeth weren’t perfect either and my weight has been a little up and down over the years. Now though, as I head towards my 40th birthday, I find that my confidence is through the roof. I feel amazing and know I could rock the odd photo shoot that comes my way. (All of the above photos were taken by my hubby over the past… ahem… 12 years!)

I’ve noticed such a difference in myself just in the past couple of years. I really do think that women who look after themselves improve so much with age, don’t you? I know I have 😉 I really do feel fabulous at 40 (well, nearly 40!).
Just little things like the way I dress seem so much better than 20 years ago (luckily I don’t have too much photographic evidence of my fashion faux pas of yesteryear!), and my decision to stop dyeing my hair has much to do with it, I think. I hated having that whole dodgy look of dark and grey roots showing through after just a few weeks of having it done. Plus, I read so many horror stories of women who had been dyeing their hair for decades and then suddenly, the reaction from hell. I even read about some deaths… can you believe that? Crazy huh? So, with hubby and myself becoming more and more healthy, I decided enough was enough and stopping dyeing it altogether. I’m very lucky though, that I have gorgeous silvery white highlights throughout my mane 🙂
Have you thought about letting your hair grow naturally? It’s really quite liberating. And beautiful… look at some of the incredible women on my Pinterest board, Seize the Grey. You’ll certainly be inspired, I’m sure.
But it’s not just about my hair colour and choice of clothes that give me more confidence, I think generally speaking, women become more comfortable with their bodies as they grow older too, which is kinda weird because when I was in my 20s, although I was quite slim with great legs, I would compare myself with everyone and think the opposite. I remember that I didn’t particularly like my body back then yet now, I love it. It’s an amazing piece of kit!
I wish I’d have had the confidence then that I have now. But saying that, maybe it’s just one of many great things about reaching middle age. What do you think? Are you loving being in your 40s, 50s and beyond? I’d love to hear how you’ve changed over the years.
