Shabby Chic: how to distress a bedside table

Lately, we seem to have gone shabby chic mad. Our tastes have evolved, going from clean lines and simple furniture colours to the shabby chic, distressed look. We absolutely love it and so it seems our house will soon be over-run with it. Distressing furniture is addictive! Read on to find out how to distress a bedside table.

We bought two cutesy bedside tables from a second hand / antique dealer (I’ll be blogging about his place soon because it’s chock full of the most amazing stuff) and then went on the hunt for chalk paint with which to paint them.

We found some white and blue paint from Leroy Merlin which worked well but we’ve since discovered another shop which sells the even better Annie Sloan products. If you Google Annie Sloan, you’ll see that her stuff is THE stuff to use when distressing furniture. But for these tables, we used the Leroy Merlin products.

It’s a very simple procedure, all we did was clean the bedside table, making sure there was no dust/dirt left on it, then lightly rubbed it down with sandpaper (actually, this wasn’t entirely necessary but hubby felt the need to do it at this stage), before painting it with a couple of coats of the white paint (over the course of two days), then we painted the front decorative sections in the blue paint. The following day when the paint was completely dry, we then used sandpaper to gently rub any areas to give this distressed look. I think it worked remarkably well.

Actually, we loved the effect so much that we’ve since bought a beautiful armoire to do, as well as an old trunk which we’ve doubled up as a coffee table. We’ve also got plans to make a grandfather clock into jewellery / accessory storage for all my bits and pieces before distressing it, and we’ve a large sideboard to do too. At this stage, we’re going to need a bigger house!
I’ll be blogging about how it all goes so if you’re interested in this sort of thing, do subscribe to my blog posts (find the box in my sidebar) to keep up to date 🙂
