Author Interview: meet the fabulous Megan O’Russell

I’m delighted to have one of my first author interviews here on this blog. I used to have a fiction blog where I would post all sorts of information about books and their authors but after I decided to focus all my attention on www.suzyturner.com, I’ve been neglecting my fellow authors. So today, I’ve got a bookish treat – an interview with author Megan O’Russell (above).

Hi Megan! Please tell us a little about yourself.

When I’m not writing, I’m usually on stage. My “day job” is performing in musicals, so I am not a stranger to tap shoes and glitter. I also have a horrible case of wanderlust, so research for my next dream destination goes hand in hand with my author research (places I’ve managed to visit often end up in my books).

What is the title of your latest book and what is it about?

My newest book is the Young Adult Fantasy The Girl Without Magic. Think of a mix between Doctor Who and The Chronicles of Narnia, throw in a strong female protagonist and a dash of magic, and you’d find The Girl Without Magic.

What inspired you to write it?

Oddly enough, a review of one of my other books. I touched briefly upon the primary location for The Girl Without Magic in The Tethering Series (which is sadly currently out of print). The reviewer wanted to know more about the location, and it sounded like a great idea.

Have you published any other books?

Currently in print I have the Young Adult Dystopian Girl of Glass, and YA urban fantasy How I Magically Messed Up My Life in Four Freakin’ Days.

Why did you become an author?

Honestly, and this is horrible to say, but I was having a really miserable time in the show I was performing in and needed an outlet. Being an actor is just another form of storytelling, so finding a way to create my own stories away from stage lights was the natural and very needed progression for me. I’m so glad I hated my life during that show. I can’t imagine my life without writing now.

Who, or what, inspires you?

Just about anything can if it hits me right. The spark for the first book came from the idea of a boy waiting in a window. Girl of Glass came from a dare while on an Alaskan hike with my husband. How I Magically Messed Up My Life in Four Freakin’ Days came out of a horrible brush with frost bite. It all just depends on what clicks.

Where is your favourite place to write?

Well, I’m on the national tour of The Wizard of Oz right now, so most of my writing happens in my seat on the tour bus or in my bed in the hotels. My ideal writing venue is my breakfast bar in my kitchen. I have a wonderfully comfortable red chair.

How do you like to spend your spare time?

I love reading, hiking, Disney World, and traveling. If I’m not doing any of those things, I’m probably playing my ukulele or spending time with my extraordinary friends.

How would you describe your personal style?

Hmm. Well, if the question is about clothing, I would have to say yoga pants/just-napped-on-the-floor-of-a-bus chic at the moment. (Tour life can be rough.) As far as writing is concerned: conversational, fast paced, and inclusive. I want everything I write to make sense when spoken. It might be an actor thing, but even a description of shoes should be written as it would be spoken. I think that spoken word pattern is what distinguishes my voice as an author.

Thanks so much, Megan!
