The Oscars: Writers, you are the true backbone of the industry

Charlize Theron“Writers, we know that you are the true backbone of the industry and we love you for it,” said Charlize Theron at the Oscars this week. This line alone made me cry. I’m a writer and an emotional wreck at times (clearly today more so than usual) but this is the kind of thing that I need to hear every now and again. Without writers, there would be no stories, there would be no books, no movies. Can you imagine that? I’d really rather not.

I’ve watched the Oscars religiously every year for at least the past decade or so. I absolutely love it, not just to see the beautiful gowns adorning each and every stunning actress out there (the red carpet prior to the event is always entertaining though) – but for me it’s because of the writers and the stories. I love watching and listening to the winning speeches – especially the writers, because they quite often inspire me. They tell me to keep at it. To not stop. To believe that anything can truly happen – if you work hard enough and believe in yourself, you can do whatever it is you want to do. I believe that. Really, I do.

Academy Awars

Just sometimes though, I struggle. I doubt myself. I doubt my abilities. I get blocked and can’t seem to find the right words to continue. But the Oscars, well, they’re like a boost to my writer’s brain. I had to pause watching it so I could write this all down. Let’s just hope that it will give me the boost I need to start writing fiction again. You see, I haven’t actually written anything new for a while. I’ve started three books but have lacked the motivation and the inspiration to finish them. It’s dis-heartening and a little depressing when I struggle to find the right words. Okay, not just that but the inclination to do so. I am a writer, I love to write, yet why is it so hard sometimes?

So I tune in to the Oscars once again, hoping to find that glimmer of inspiration to give me the boost I need to complete these three works of fiction before moving on to something new. And, as usual, the Oscars have given me what I need. Watching these talented writers be recognised for their fantastic work is inspiring me, putting back the fire in my belly to create something unique of my own. I am a writer. I write stories that many people love and I’m not stopping now. I may have had a lull in my creativity, but it’s over. I’m back and I’m moving forward. So thank you 88th Academy Awards, for giving me a helping hand. I’ll be watching again next year, and the year after that, and so on. You are an inspiration to me.
