If you’ve been around here for a while, you might remember that I used to take part in the A to Z Blogging Challenge years ago, back in the early days of blogging. Then, like many things, life got in the way and I stopped doing it for a while. Last year though, I decided to give it another go… and I absolutely loved it. It gave me a reason to show up, to write consistently, and to be a bit more creative with my content. So here I am again this year, diving back in and (hopefully!) sticking with it from A right through to Z.

So, let’s start at the beginning…
When I hear the word alchemy, I immediately think of witchcraft, bubbling potions, and slightly mysterious women in cloaks (which, let’s be honest, is a vibe). But alchemy is actually much more than that. At its core, it’s about transformation. Not the dramatic, Hollywood kind, but the quiet, everyday kind that sneaks up on you when you’re not paying attention.
If we go by a more traditional definition, alchemy was an ancient practice that combined elements of science, philosophy, and a bit of mysticism. It was all about transforming materials — most famously trying to turn base metals into gold — as well as searching for things like the elixir of life. But beyond the physical side of it, alchemy has long been seen as a metaphor for personal and spiritual transformation. In other words, it’s not just about changing things on the outside, but evolving on the inside too.
It’s taking something heavy, messy, or just plain inconvenient… and somehow turning it into something meaningful. And when you look at it like that, it suddenly feels a lot closer to home, because haven’t we all done this in our own way? Turning heartbreak into strength, confusion into clarity (eventually), and those “what on earth am I doing with my life?” moments into something that actually leads somewhere. That’s alchemy. Not perfect, not instant, but real.

I can see it so clearly when I look back at my own life. Things that felt overwhelming or even pointless at the time ended up shaping me in ways I couldn’t have planned if I tried. Not in a neat little “everything happens for a reason” way (because honestly, life doesn’t always work like that), but more in a “you make something of it anyway” kind of way. And I think that’s where the real magic is.
It also shows up in the small things. Creating a home that feels calm and safe, turning everyday routines into something you actually enjoy, or shifting your mindset just enough to stop spiralling and start breathing again. It’s subtle, but it’s powerful.
And interestingly, alchemy pops up all over the place in books and films too. The Alchemist is probably the most obvious one, centred around personal transformation and following your path. Then you’ve got Harry Potter with the Philosopher’s Stone (a classic alchemical idea), and even Fullmetal Alchemist, which dives heavily into the idea of equivalent exchange — nothing comes without a cost. It just goes to show how this idea of transformation has always fascinated us.
So no, alchemy isn’t just about ancient practices or turning things into gold. It’s about becoming. Bit by bit, day by day, without even realising it half the time. And if you ask me, that’s far more magical than any potion.
