Style Imitating Art: Simultaneous Dresses

This week’s Style Imitating Art inspiration piece is Simultaneous Dresses (Three Women, Forms, Colours) which was created in 1925 by Sonia Delaunay. Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar (14 Shades of Grey), Terri (Meadow Tree Style), and Daenel (Living Outside the Stacks). Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of the hosts selects an inspiration image and they each post the image on their blogs. The following Monday they share their art inspired outfits. Participants submit their art inspired outfits with the curator by 10pm Tuesday and, that Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog. This week, the curator is Terri.

Simultaneous Dresses

When I first saw Simultaneous Dresses, I was confused—not by the actual piece of art, which is quite striking, but confused as to how I would style it. There is so much going on this painting. It’s full of straight lines, zig-zags, chevrons and colours, I really was unsure which way to go. Initially, I thought I might wear stripes, perhaps with black trousers. But then I figured I ought to wear a dress, considering it’s called Simultaneous Dresses. That’s when I remembered an old dress I bought years ago from Primark which had the same pattern.

Even though I’ve had this dress for years, I’ve hardly worn it. Not because I don’t like it, because I do. I love it, in fact. I’ve hardly worn it because it’s very figure hugging and I always get so self conscious in it. But, now that I’m becoming much more comfortable in my skin and I’m developing my style, I realised all I needed was a shirt to wear over the top of it and tied at the waist. Remember my post about doing this exact thing when you want a bit of extra coverage? See…I’m listening to my own advice lol!

Because there are blues, reds and blacks (among other colours) in Simultaneous Dresses, I chose a red shirt bought from Massimo Dutti over a year ago, folded up the sleeves and threw it over the top of my chevron dress. Once it was tied at the waist, I loved it! As for shoes, I could easily have put on a pair of heels, which I would have done, had I not stubbed my little toe the night before lol. OMG it hurt like a m**********r (and yes I said that out loud at the time!), it throbbed the whole night and the next day, there’s no way I would have been able to put on a pair of heels lol! So, I boldly chose a pair of trainers instead!

My red Skechers were my footwear of choice and I couldn’t be happier with the result. I love the fact that I’m wearing such a dressy dress, an elegant gold clutch and earrings with a shirt tied at the waist with trainers. Fun, right? So, what do you think of my outfit inspired by Simultaneous Dresses? Is it a look you would choose? How would you style this fabulous painting?
