It’s time for another Songful Style challenge, and this month, I had the pleasure of choosing the song! I went with something that’s been stuck in my head (and heart) for weeks now — Six by Rose Betts. It’s one of those songs that grabs you from the first line and doesn’t let go. I’ve been playing it on repeat on Spotify and just couldn’t get enough of its haunting sound and emotional depth. Last month we styled Chantilly Lace by The Big Bopper.
If you’re not familiar with Rose Betts, she’s a British singer-songwriter with a unique, emotive voice—soft, soulful, and captivating. She isn’t mainstream (yet!), but has built a dedicated following thanks to her beautiful lyrics and haunting melodies. I first discovered her through her absolutely stunning rendition of “Song to the Siren”, which was featured on the Zack Snyder’s Justice League soundtrack. I heard it, instantly needed to know who it was, and Shazamed it right there and then! That track—like most of her music—is raw and stripped back, usually just her voice and a piano. Six is much the same. It’s short but powerful, and I adore it.
What is Songful Style?
If you’re new here, Songful Style is a monthly style challenge I do with my gorgeous co-hosts—Shelbee from Shelbee on the Edge and Marsha from Marsha in the Middle. Each month one of us picks a song, and we all create an outfit inspired by it. It might be based on the mood, the lyrics, the sound, the video, or the general vibe—whatever it brings to mind.
It’s such a fun way to get creative and try something a bit different with our outfits. We have a link-up every month and encourage anyone to join in the fun!
My Look Inspired by Six by Rose Betts
Since the song feels so emotional and oceanic to me—like it’s soaked in memories and sadness—I knew I wanted to wear something that gave off a coastal feel. So I reached for this gorgeous blue and cream dress that honestly reminds me of the beach on a moody day. (I had fully intended to go to the beach to take photos but this weekend just happened to coincide with that time of the month when I felt awful. And therefore, the beach was the last place I wanted to go. Oh well. Next time, maybe?). Had I chosen this song in the winter, I would have gone for a dark and moody feel.

The colour combo of the dress gives me serious seaside vibes, and it’s got little seashells attached (how cute is that?). The sleeves, and the bit around the bottom, have this netted detail that reminds me of old fishing nets—which felt spot on for the kind of imagery the song brought up for me. The dress has a softness to it, but with interesting textures and movement that make it feel a bit dreamy.

I styled it with some simple rose gold sandals (old from Aldo) to keep things light and effortless—nothing too fussy. I wanted the dress to be the main focus, so I just added a few ocean-inspired jewellery pieces (all inherited) like the seahorse ring, abalone shell necklace and some pearl drop earrings. I finished the look off with my blue Desigual handbag—removing the handle to make it look like a large clutch.

The Meaning Behind the Song
Six by Rose Betts is one of those songs that hits you right in the heart, even if you don’t fully understand why at first. It’s emotional, mysterious and totally open to interpretation—which I love. Rose has said it’s about her family, but like many of us, she finds it too complicated to explain in a neat little box. The lyrics are full of sea imagery—there’s a shipwreck, and the line “six dead pieces on the seashore” really sticks with you. It’s all very metaphorical, touching on the emotional baggage we carry from our loved ones and the pain we sometimes absorb just by being close to people who are struggling. There’s a definite Celtic feel to it too, which makes sense since Rose has Irish roots (and I’ve always adored Celtic vibes). The song feels almost mythic, like a folk story or something from a dream. What I really love is how she leaves so much unsaid—it gives you the space to make your own meaning from it. That’s what makes it so special.

Six by Rose Betts Lyrics
Six dead pieces on the seashore
That the waves brought in for cleaning
And when the people found them they asked for more
Six dead pieces on the seashore
That the waves brought in for cleaning
But when the night came in there was only four
There was only four
Blood and tears
I’m getting tired of
Facing your fears, your fears
Blood and tears
I’m getting tired of
Facing your fears
Six dead pieces on the seashore
That the waves brought in for healing
But then you left us there
What you do that for
What you do that for
Six dead pieces lying stone cold
With the smell of death upon them
Oh is there time still left to release the hold
To release the hold
Blood and tears
I’m getting tired of
Facing your fears, your fears
Blood and tears
I’m getting tired of
Facing your fears
And you can count every time that the hammer falls
You can hold up your pain like a lightning bolt
But the feeling it’s bleeding into everything
You can kill every flower that your daydreams touch
And you can cry for the world that you hate so much
But I left the door open why didn’t you turn
We’re just six dead pieces six dead pieces
Better just to let us burn
Blood and tears
I’m getting tired of
Facing your fears, your fears
Blood and tears
I’m getting tired of
Facing your fears
Six dead pieces on the seashore
That the waves brought in for cleaning
But when the night came in there was only four
There was only four
