Songful Style Challenge: Time Waited

It’s Songful Style time again (last month we styled Six by Rose Betts), and this month Marsha chose such a beautiful, atmospheric track: Time Waited by My Morning Jacket. If you’ve never listened to them before, they’re an American rock band formed in Louisville, Kentucky back in 1998. Known for their dreamy, reverb-heavy sound and genre-blending style, they’ve been compared to everyone from Neil Young to The Flaming Lips.

About the Band

My Morning Jacket was founded by Jim James (vocals and guitar) and really found their stride in the early 2000s with albums like It Still Moves and Z. They’ve always been a band that thrives on live performance—their shows are often described as almost spiritual experiences, with long, improvisational jams that take the audience somewhere else entirely.

Fun fact: their band name actually came from a random moment when Jim James stumbled across a jacket with the initials “MMJ” embroidered on it after a fire at a local bar. Something about it stuck, and the name was born.

About the Song – Time Waited

Time Waited is from their 2021 self-titled album My Morning Jacket, which was their first full studio album in six years. The track itself feels deeply reflective—like an exploration of missed chances, the passing of time, and the fragile beauty of connection.

It opens with the lines:

“Well, they say time waits for no one, dear
And it takes near death to show one, yeah
But time waited for you and me.”

There’s something really tender about that sentiment. Time usually rushes forward, uncaring, but here Jim James suggests that in the midst of love—or deep human connection—time almost bends, pausing just long enough for something meaningful to happen. It’s such a lovely twist on the old saying time waits for no one.

Trivia & Tidbits

  • Jim James has said much of the album reflects the uncertainty and chaos of recent years, but also the grounding power of relationships. This song feels like a love letter to those moments that anchor us when the world feels too fast.
  • The dreamy, reverb-soaked sound is a signature MMJ style, making this track feel almost cinematic—like something you’d hear over the closing credits of a poignant film.
  • My Morning Jacket are known for stretching their songs out in live performances, and many fans say Time Waited takes on an almost hypnotic quality when played on stage.

My Time Waited Outfit

Time Wasted

Admittedly, I really struggled to style this song, despite it being such a beautiful one. But there was one thing that I kept noticing in the official music video, and that was the pink flower on the lead singer’s waistcoat. I’m not sure what kind of flower it is (I’m pretty useless when it comes to plants, lol!), but I figured I’d use that as my sartorial inspiration.

So I eventually settled on my blue skirt with pink flowers that I thrifted from Vinted last year. This is actually the first time I’ve worn it—or even tried it on! I realised it’s a little big at the waist so it sits lower than I’d like, but it’s fine for now. Maybe I’ll take it in a bit once I get my sewing machine out again.

Time Wasted

I teamed it with a pale pink vest top, which has the same gold sparkle around the neckline as the skirt’s waistband. I bought the top a few years ago from H&M, but I’ve never loved it—probably because the colour isn’t the most flattering close to my face. Still, it worked well here. I added a denim waistcoat as a nod to the lead singer, along with some pink and blue bracelets and some very boho earrings.

Time Wasted

And since some of the band members wore hats in the video, I decided to add my brown hat, bought from Primark years ago and (until now) never worn! The denim handbag was made by my bestie, Sarah (she’s so freaking talented, that woman!), and the shoes are a recent Vinted buy. I’ve always wanted a pair of Palladiums, ever since they were popular back in the ’90s. I’ve tried to buy them new, but whenever I spotted them in-store they never had my size (turns out I need a 39.5!). So I was delighted to find these blue ones on Vinted — and they fit perfectly. Result!
