Welcome to this month’s Tell Us About blogging challenge! Each month, a small group of us from around the world come together to write about a shared theme — interpreting it however we fancy. It’s always fascinating to see how differently (or similarly!) we all approach the same word. Last month we wrote about Blooming, and this month we’re writing about something a little spookier, more mysterious and magical — The Supernatural.
When I first chose the theme, I thought it would be a breeze — but honestly, it totally threw me. I wasn’t sure what angle to take. I don’t have a drawer full of classic ghost stories, I’ve never seen a poltergeist or been possessed (thankfully), and even though I adore all things magical and ethereal, I didn’t really think I’d had any “proper” supernatural experiences.

That said, I do love the other kind of supernatural too — give me a creepy TV show like Supernatural or anything with ghosts, psychics, or the paranormal and I’m there (as long as it’s not too scary — I’m a total wimp with horror!).
But then I started thinking more deeply and realised that “supernatural” isn’t just about horror movies and haunted dolls. It’s really about anything that happens just beyond the edges of what we consider the natural world. And actually, I have had my fair share of those moments.

The Ghost at the End of My Bed
The first supernatural experience I ever had was after my mum passed away when I was just thirteen. It was devastating, of course, and at the time I didn’t know how to process it all. But not long afterwards, I began to feel something… unusual.
At night, as I lay in bed, I could feel the weight of someone sitting gently at the end of it. Not every night, but often enough. I was terrified at first — absolutely frozen with fear. I didn’t dare open my eyes. But when I eventually told my dad about it, he gently said, “That’s just your mum letting you know she’s still with you.”
Something clicked. After that, it never felt scary again. It was like a warm presence — peaceful, protective. I believe it was her. And I’ve never forgotten it.

Supernatural Smoke, Souls and Butterflies
Years later, when my stepmother-in-law passed away, something even more extraordinary happened. I was there as she died — and I swear I saw her soul leave her body.
As she took her final breath, it was as though something lifted from her — and at the same time, I sensed his presence too. Her husband (Michael’s dad) had passed away a few years earlier, and it honestly felt like their souls met in that moment. I saw them intertwine — almost like smoke blending together — before disappearing upwards. It was incredibly peaceful. And beautiful.
After she passed, we kept seeing butterflies. They would appear at the window all the time, as if she was checking in. I know some people might think that’s just coincidence, but it felt like more than that. It felt like her way of saying, “I’m still here.”
Whispered Encouragement From Beyond
Not long after her death, Michael was racing on the track — something his mum had always encouraged. As he rode, he said he felt her with him. He actually heard her voice in his head saying, “Go on, you’ve got this.” And guess what? That day, he hit his fastest lap time ever.
Coincidence? Maybe. But I like to think she gave him a little supernatural nudge.

The Other Kind of Supernatural Story
More recently, I’ve become fascinated with a particular type of story I’ve seen crop up again and again on YouTube — interviews with people who briefly died, then came back. You know the ones? Where they flatline for a few seconds or minutes, and when they come back, they all tell the exact same kind of story.
They say they returned “home” to another plane or place — sometimes described as a different planet, a shimmering world, or something impossible to put into human words. And there, all their original loved ones were waiting for them, cheering, ready to hear everything about their human life. But just as they began to realise what was happening, they were told it wasn’t their time yet — and boom, they were back.
It gives me goosebumps. Not because it’s creepy, but because it feels oddly right. Like, what if this life isn’t the start or the end? What if it’s just a wild, beautiful chapter we agreed to write?
I honestly find that idea comforting. That there’s more than this. That we’re all part of something bigger.

And That’s the Thing About the Supernatural…
For me, the supernatural isn’t always about haunted houses or shadowy corners. It’s the strange coincidences. The gut feelings that turn out to be right. The way time bends in dreams. The warmth that shows up when you’re thinking about someone you lost. It’s the mystery. And I think that mystery is what makes life so magical.
