Welcome back to another Tell Us About post! Last month, we explored the theme of Seasonal Changes, and this month, our topic (chosen by Rosie) is Thursdays, and I’ll admit—at first I was stumped. Thursdays don’t get the same attention as, say, frantic Mondays or thank-goodness-it’s-Fridays. But then it hit me: Thursdays used to be my favourite day of the week.
Way back when I worked for The Algarve Resident (now known as The Portugal Resident), a weekly newspaper here in Portugal, Thursdays were golden. The paper usually went to press on Tuesday afternoon (or in a pinch, Wednesday), which meant that by Thursday, the pressure was off. The phones weren’t ringing off the hook, the newsroom didn’t hum with urgency, and for a moment, we could breathe. Thursdays were the calm before the next storm—an in-between space where everything paused, just for a day.
I started at the paper not long after completing my A Levels. Initially, I was taken on as a trainee journalist. It sounded exciting at first—chasing stories, learning the ropes of reporting—but it didn’t take long to realise that hard news wasn’t quite for me. I wasn’t pushy enough for some of the tougher moments the job demanded. I’ll never forget being asked to approach the family of someone who’d died in a tragic accident for a comment. I just couldn’t do it.

So I pivoted into a role behind the scenes—as a Pagemaker, working on layout and design—and I loved it. There was something satisfying about pulling the pieces together, fitting headlines and photos into place, and making it all look just right. Eventually, I’d go on to work for another magazine where I became features editor, assistant editor, and finally editor… before the financial crisis swept it all away, and I was made redundant.

But I’ll always remember those chilled Thursdays at The Algarve Resident. The slight lull in the week, the knowing smiles around the office, the shared sense that—just for now—we could sip our coffee slowly and catch our breath.
Funny, isn’t it, how certain days carry specific energy depending on the chapter of your life? For me, Thursdays will always hum with a quiet kind of joy. A space to reset. A little moment of peace between deadlines.
Do you have a Thursday memory too? I’d love to hear it.

And don’t forget to check out how my fellow bloggers have interpreted this month’s theme:
- Debbie has gone with the first thing that came into her head when she heard the topic of Thursdays – a children’s nursery rhyme. Deb – Deb’s World.

- Leslie had a giggle when she discovered this month’s theme for the Tell Us About global writing series. She and her daughters have a private joke about ‘Thursdays’. Hope you will stop by to find out more. Leslie – Once Upon a Time and Happily Ever After.
- Marsha loved Thursdays since she was a teenager. And, the reasons are very, very different! Marsha – Marsha In The Middle.
