What my weird umbilical cord dream really means

Last night I had one of the most surreal dreams I’ve ever had—and let’s be honest, I’ve had a few. But this one? This one left me waking up seriously freaked out. You know that feeling when you’re not sure if you need a hug or an exorcist? Yep, that.

It started with a loose crown in my mouth. As I poked around in there, I noticed something stuck—so naturally, I pulled it. And pulled. And pulled. What came out was long and fleshy (yes, it was as gross as it sounds), and eventually I realised… it was an umbilical cord. Attached to it was an actual umbilical sac. With a baby inside.

I held this odd little bundle in my arms—because of course I did, I’m me—and started running towards my husband shouting for him to call an ambulance. Then I passed out.

And here’s where it got even weirder (as if a DIY oral birth wasn’t enough). The baby? Wasn’t exactly cute. I mean, it was kind of precious in that “bless, what even are you?” way, but it definitely didn’t look right. Almost warped. Like it hadn’t quite formed properly—or belonged in this world yet.

As I ran with this strange baby, I noticed other people around, just lingering on the edges like background characters in a fever dream. One of them? My husband’s teenage crush. You know the one. The girl who was never nice to anyone, wore too much hairspray, and somehow still got all the attention. There she was, dressed like she’d just stepped out of an ’80s teen movie, watching me run past in crisis. Of course she was.

So, What on Earth Does It All Mean?

Honestly, I couldn’t stop thinking about it all day. After a strong cup of coffee and a bit of reflecting, I did what anyone in the 21st century would do when faced with such a bizarre and slightly disturbing dream…

I asked ChatGPT what it all meant. Obviously.

Turns out, this dream might not be as random as it first seemed.

  • The baby could symbolise something I’m bringing into the world—an idea, a new part of myself, something deeply personal. The fact it didn’t look “right” might be my own fear that it’s not good enough, or not fully ready. But I still held it. I still protected it. That says something powerful about self-acceptance—even for the weird bits.
  • The umbilical cord coming out of my mouth? That feels like a creative or spiritual truth being pulled up and out. Like something’s been gestating inside me, and I’m finally (painfully, awkwardly) ready to give it a voice.
  • Passing out could be about the overwhelm that comes when we finally face a deep truth or take a leap we’ve been avoiding. It’s too much to process all at once, so the dream just… shuts the scene down.
  • And then there’s Miss 1989. Apparently she represents outdated insecurities or the ghosts of old comparisons. Her showing up now—dressed like a time capsule—is like my subconscious going, “Hey, wanna let this go yet?” Honestly? I think I do.

I don’t think it’s just a random mash-up of thoughts. I believe our dreams often carry messages from deeper parts of ourselves—sometimes even from beyond. If you’re curious about the supernatural side of things, check out my post on the supernatural and how it touches our lives.

Either way, it left me feeling like something’s shifting. Something old is finally being released. And something new—however strange and unformed—is ready to be held, accepted, and nurtured.

The umbilical cord coming out of my mouth felt like a creative truth finally finding its voice. I’ve talked before about embracing imagination and letting our inner worlds guide us — you can read more about that here: Imagination as a magical gateway.

I’d love to know—have you ever had a dream that left you shaken, stirred, or scratching your head? Pop it in the comments below or message me privately if you’re more of a quiet dream-sharer. I’m fascinated by how our subconscious (or the universe!) sends us these surreal stories in the night.

And while we’re on the subject… I’ve been working on something special behind the scenes—a new book all about midlife magic, soulful living, and the kind of intuitive wisdom that includes dreams like this. I’ll be sharing more very soon, but for now… let’s just say the dreaming mind definitely has a chapter of its own.

Until then—sleep weird, dream big, and don’t be afraid of what shows up. Even if it’s bizarre, messy, or straight out of a forgotten memory—it might be trying to tell you something…
