Why We Love Amazon Prime (Especially Living Abroad)

Living in Portugal, Amazon Prime has become a bit of a lifeline for us. Since Brexit, getting things from the UK just isn’t what it used to be—between the customs fees and the hit-and-miss deliveries, we gave up trying. So Amazon (specifically Amazon.es for us) is usually the best option. And honestly, it’s brilliant. We use it all the time.

We’ve been Amazon Prime members for years now, and we genuinely love it. It’s not just about the fast delivery (which is fab)—it’s everything else that comes with it.

When I can’t find what I’m after second-hand—on Vinted, in local thrift shops, or anywhere else nearby—we usually turn to Amazon. I try not to buy clothes there (I’m all about the thrift life, let’s be honest), but for everything else? It’s been a bit of a lifesaver.

Especially during the never-ending saga of finishing our new home (yes, we’ve moved in… but the jobs list is still alive and well!). We’ve bought all sorts through Amazon—things we simply couldn’t find locally, like modern black and gold sink plugs (who knew those would be so hard to get?!), a TP Link router and repeater so the Wi-Fi would actually reach my office, recessed lights for the false ceilings, door hinges, even relay switches for the electric blinds. One of our favourite finds was a gorgeous black shower and matching tap—we’re keeping an eye on how well it holds up and I’ll report back in a future post!

Cheaper, Faster, Easier Shopping

With Amazon Prime, we often get next-day delivery and cheaper postage, which makes life so much easier—especially when you’re living somewhere a little more rural like we are. Whether it’s household stuff, books, gadgets, or gifts, I always feel a bit relieved knowing Prime’s got our backs.

But Let’s Be Real—We’re Obsessed with Prime Video

The thing we probably use the most is Amazon Prime Video. Honestly, we gave up on Netflix a while ago. We dip back in now and again (mainly when Stranger Things has a new season), but it’s Prime Video that we turn to most nights.

There’s just such a huge variety—from brilliant original series to old classics we can’t get enough of. Of course, not everything is a hit (I still can’t get over how bad that Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell film was—what happened there?!), but overall, it’s amazing.

Here are a few of our favourites (that are hopefully still available depending on your location):

  • The Bondsman – A brand new supernatural series starring Kevin Bacon as a dead bounty hunter chasing demons. YES PLEASE. Creepy, funny, weird. We loved it.
  • Elementary – Sherlock Holmes with a twist. We’ve watched it multiple times and still enjoy every episode.

  • Monk – One of our all-time faves. Just perfect comfort viewing.
  • Fallout – EPIC. If you haven’t seen it yet, you must. We’re dying for the next season!
  • The Terminal List – Gritty, fast-paced, and full of action. Think The Bourne Identity.
  • Supernatural, Stargate, The Good Wife, Bones, Vampire Diaries, The Mentalist, Chicago Med, The Night Manager—so many bingeable shows.
  • Clarkson’s Farm – Just started this one thanks to a friend’s recommendation (hi Gail from Is This Mutton?), and it’s so funny and unexpectedly insightful.
  • The Doctor Blake Mysteries – One for me when I fancy something cosy and clever. Set in 1950s Australia, it’s moody, vintage, and totally my vibe.

And here’s a fun little moment: while watching The Bondsman, we heard one of the characters singing and Michael said, “She sounds just like the singer from Sugarland.” Turns out, it was Jennifer Nettles (above)! We love little surprises like that.
