Silves Medieval Festival: what I wore for a super hot night

Silves Medieval Festival

The Silves Medieval Festival has been going on for about 15 years now, and this is only the second time we’ve attended! Silves is a mere fifteen minutes drive from where I live so I really have no excuse. It’s a fabulous festival too. If you’re ever in the region at this time of year, it’s one of those events you should definitely include in your agenda.

Silves Medieval Festival – choose your shoes wisely

Costing just 5 euros entrance fee (which includes the fun-filled jousting show), the Silves Medieval Festival is a cheap way to wile away a few hours within the small city of Silves, known for its stunning Moorish castle. There’s so much to see whilst there, and you’ll be wowed by the authenticity of the event. I should add here that it’s a necessity to wear sensible shoes there. There’s lots of cobblestones and it’s rather hilly – and the cobbles do get very slippery so choose your shoes wisely!

It’s also possible to hire some rather unusual clothes to wear during the event, which gives it even more of an authentic feel. Me, though, I give that aspect a miss. I can’t bear to be hot at the best of times, let along be all trussed up in velvet dresses or sack-like robes! No thank you.

My ‘festival’ outfit

Instead, I wore a simple pair of white denim shorts and a vest top. I had intended to wear a tee-shirt and sneakers but it was just too hot for me. Sandals were the only option. And I was still TOO hot! I also wanted to be completely hands-free, so a bumbag was the way to go. However, I only had one bumbag which is brown leather and really quite drab, to be honest. So, we popped into Aqua shopping centre yesterday morning to see if I could find a more suitable one.

What I was looking for, was something bright and colourful. So I bought a gold one lol! But it’s gorgeous, isn’t it? A little on the small side to carry my things but it did a good job and allowed me to free up my hands and give my shoulders a rest (I do get shoulder ache from carrying standard handbags all the time, don’t you?). This one was from Parfois for just 12.99 euros.

I added a few more hints of gold to tie it all in together – gold and black earrings, a gold bangle, a gold ring (all gifts from mother-in-law) and gold nail varnish! I think it was quite a good festival outfit, wouldn’t you agree?

We had a wonderful evening with friends, eating some delicious barbecued meat, followed up by an ice cream a little while later. I was shattered by the time we got home though – mainly because of the heat. Stupidly we slept without the air con on last night and this morning, I’m ridiculously groggy and feel pretty dismal….urgh. I think I need a dip in the pool!
