Songful Style: Flowers are Red by Harry Chapin

Flowers are Red

It’s the last Monday of November which means it’s time for some music inspiration! And we’re diving into the emotions of “Flowers Are Red” by Harry Chapin, a beautiful song chosen by Marsha. Last month’s song was chosen by Shelbee and was Meet Virginia by Train. This month’s challenge brought a burst of colours straight from a rainbow, and let me tell you, it was a fun ride! Picture this: I’m strutting through the Black Friday chaos with Michael, rocking an outfit that says, “I’m here to spread some joy.” Yes, this is what I wore to have a good wander round Mar Shopping over the weekend, and I loved wearing so much colour. But why? Why all this colour, you might ask, when the song is called “Flowers are Red”?

“Flowers Are Red” is a bit of a tear-jerker, touching on the conformity in education. It’s all about a little boy with a wild imagination, and the system trying to tame his colourful spirit. Feeling the sadness in the song, I rebelled by wearing every colour I could find. It’s a celebration of individuality and a nod to that little boy who dared to be different.

I must admit to never having heard of Harry Chapin before, but he is one of Marsha’s favourites. The song is beautiful though and I’m going to make an effort to listen to more of his music.

Now, about the outfit! I’ve got these fab Tiffosi blue jeans that were an absolute bargain recently (and they fit perfectly!), a multi-coloured Primark shirt giving off major rainbow vibes, and a fresh green jumper from H&M. Topping it off are my pink sparkly Doc Martens and a rainbow handbag from Kurt Geiger. Now, my hair’s doing its own thing—growing out can be a bit wild, can’t it? OMG I just tried to find the DMs for you online and someone is trying to sell them for 430 dollars on eBay!!! It says they’re rare! Who knew?! However, I did find a pair of Doc Martens in pink shearling which are super cool!!

If you’re new to Songful Style, it’s a collab hosted by me, Shelbee (Shelbee on the Edge), and Marsha (Marsha in the Middle). It is a collaboration featuring outfits inspired by songs. We’re also inviting anyone who would like to join us to post their own outfits in the link-up below. It doesn’t matter from what angle the song inspires the outfit—it can be from the lyrics, the title, the tune itself, the album cover, or even the music video. Join the party! Check out those soul-stirring lyrics below and let the music inspire your fashionista spirit!

Ready to share your song-inspired style? Link up below and let the Songful Style community feel your vibe. We’re skipping Songful Style in December because it would fall on Christmas day and we just know things will be crazy lol. So our next song has been chosen by me, and is Humankind by Coldplay and we will be doing that challenge on the last Monday in January. Can’t wait to see you there!

Flowers are Red Lyrics

The little boy went first day of school
He got some crayons and started to draw
He put colors all over the paper
For colors was what he saw
And the teacher said.
What you doin’ young man
I’m paintin’ flowers he said
She said…
It’s not the time for art young man
And anyway flowers are green and red
There’s a time for everything young man
And a way it should be done
You’ve got to show concern for everyone else
For you’re not the only one
And she said…
Flowers are red young man
Green leaves are green
There’s no need to see flowers any other way
Than the way they always have been seen
But the little boy said…
There are so many colors in the rainbow
So many colors in the morning sun
So many colors in the flower and i see every one
Well the teacher said.
You’re sassy
There’s ways that things should be
And you’ll paint flowers the way they are
So repeat after me…
And she said…
Flowers are red young man
Green leaves are green
There’s no need to see flowers any other way
Than the way they always have been seen
But the little boy said…
There are so many colors in the rainbow
So many colors in the morning sun
So many colors in the flower and i see every one
The teacher put him in a corner
She said.
It’s for your own good.
And you won’t come out ’til you get it right
And all responding like you should
Well finally he got lonely
Frightened thoughts filled his head
And he went up to the teacher
And this is what he said.
And he said
Flowers are red, green leaves are green
There’s no need to see flowers any other way
Than the way they always have been seen
Time went by like it always does
And they moved to another town
And the little boy went to another school
And this is what he found
The teacher there was smilin’
She said…
Painting should be fun
And there are so many colors in a flower
So let’s use every one
But that little boy painted flowers
In neat rows of green and red
And when the teacher asked him why
This is what he said.
And he said
Flowers are red, green leaves are green
There’s no need to see flowers any other way
Than the way they always have been seen.
