How I Styled Mondnacht for the Songful Style Challenge

It’s time for another Songful Style challenge! If you’re new here, Songful Style is a monthly collaboration between my lovely blogging friends Shelbee, Marsha and me. Each month, one of us chooses a song, and we each create an outfit inspired by it before sharing our interpretations on our blogs. It’s always fascinating to see how three people can hear the same song yet come up with completely different ideas. Last month, we had great fun styling “Rock Me Amadeus” by Falco, which resulted in some wonderfully creative interpretations. This month, Shelbee took us in an entirely different direction with “Mondnacht” (“Moonlight Night”), composed by German composer Robert Schumann in 1840.

I’ll admit, my first thought was to find a long, floaty midnight blue dress. Something soft and ethereal that captured the feeling of a peaceful moonlit evening.

Then I wandered into the Natura shop. The moment I spotted these trousers, all thoughts of a dress disappeared! Not only are they high-waisted and wide-legged (my absolute favourite style), but they fitted me perfectly the moment I tried them on. It felt like they had been waiting for me! There was even a matching jacket, but it was a little too boxy and a bit over-the-top for my taste. I much preferred letting the trousers take centre stage.

And what a story they tell. Rather than simply featuring a moon, they’re covered in wonderfully whimsical illustrations: a crescent moon surrounded by stars, flowers, fountains, a serpent, shells, celestial suns, mythical figures and leafy vines. They immediately reminded me of Romantic art and poetry, which is exactly where Mondnacht comes from.

Schumann composed Mondnacht as part of his Liederkreis, Op. 39, a collection of songs based on poems by Joseph von Eichendorff, one of Germany’s most celebrated Romantic poets. Written during Schumann’s famous “Year of Song” in 1840, the same year he finally married Clara after years of opposition from her father, it has become one of his best-known songs and is often described as one of the most beautiful German art songs ever written.

The poem itself is surprisingly simple, yet incredibly moving. It begins with the unforgettable words: “It was as though heaven had quietly kissed the earth…”

The rest of the poem paints a picture of a peaceful landscape beneath the night sky. Gentle breezes stir the fields, the forests whisper, and in the final verse the soul spreads its wings, as though flying home. It’s less about the moon itself and more about the quiet connection between heaven, earth, nature and the human spirit.

That’s why these trousers felt so perfect. They don’t literally depict a moonlit night (although I would have been excited to find something like that lol). Instead, they capture the magical, dreamlike world of the Romantic movement—nature, mythology, symbolism and quiet wonder. It feels more like stepping into an old illustrated storybook than simply wearing a celestial print.

To keep the focus on the trousers, I paired them with a pale blue camisole, a long lace kimono and a pair of incredibly comfortable orange sandals from Calla Shoes that I’ve had for several years. I finished the look with a silver starburst pendant, which I inherited from my late mother-in-law. It’s gorgeous, isn’t it?

We photographed the outfit during the golden hour, and I’m so glad we waited for that beautiful evening light. It wasn’t long after we’d returned home from a full day out on the motorbike with friends, so I was feeling quite tired, but thankfully I don’t think it shows too much in the photos!

In the end, I’m so glad I didn’t find that midnight blue dress after all. Sometimes the most obvious choice isn’t the most interesting one. These trousers captured not just the title of the song, but the mood and spirit behind it, and I think that’s what made me fall in love with them.
