Midlife is a funny thing. It sort of creeps up on you quietly, doesn’t it? One minute you’re in your 30s, feeling like you’ve got plenty of time, like you’re still figuring things out… and then suddenly, somehow, you’re over 50 and wondering how on earth that happened.

Where does the time actually go? It doesn’t feel like it should have passed so quickly. And yet, here we are.
What I find even stranger is that mentally, I don’t feel that different. I don’t wake up thinking, “Ah yes, I am now in midlife.” If anything, I often feel much younger than I am. There’s still that same version of me in there — curious, hopeful, sometimes unsure, sometimes silly.
It’s only when I catch my reflection unexpectedly, or my body reminds me in some way (usually with an ache or a random pain that appeared out of nowhere), that I think… oh. Right. Time has moved on. And yet, in many ways, I feel more me than I ever have.
There’s something about midlife that brings a kind of clarity. You start to see things differently. What matters, what doesn’t. Who you are, and who you’re not. You care a little less about fitting in, and a little more about feeling right in your own skin.
It’s not always comfortable, of course. There are changes — physical, emotional, hormonal — that can catch you off guard. Days where you feel completely yourself, and others where you don’t quite recognise how you’re feeling at all, and those other days when you just feel like shit!
But alongside all of that, there’s also a quiet confidence that starts to grow. A sense of knowing. A deeper understanding of yourself that only really comes with time and experience.
And maybe that’s the real gift of midlife. Not that everything suddenly becomes easy or clear, but that you begin to trust yourself more. You start to let go of things that don’t serve you. You soften in some ways, and strengthen in others.
You realise that life isn’t about having it all figured out — it never was. It’s about living it. Feeling it. Growing through it. And yes, sometimes wondering how you got here quite so quickly.
This is something I explore more deeply in my book too — that journey of self-discovery, growth, and learning to feel at home in yourself, no matter your age. If that resonates, you can find it on Amazon and if you google The Enchanted Midlife by Suzy Turner, you will also find it on numerous other online bookstores.
