UPDATE: Becoming alcohol free and drinking more water

Last October I shared a personal post about why I decided to quit alcohol. I promised to share updates with you but wanted to wait a few months to see how I got on. Well here I am, six months later and I am delighted to be able to tell you that I am still alcohol-free and am drinking more water instead!

Surprisingly, I have found it much easier to become alcohol-free than I ever would have thought. You see, I had been an active alcohol drinker since the age of 13 after my mother died. It wasn’t because she died that I started drinking. It was just peer pressure, and because we could so easily get away with it here in Portugal at the time. We were 13 going on 23 really! When I say, ‘we’, I’m talking about the group of teenagers that I hung out with at the time.

Since then, I drank every weekend – and sometimes during the week too. Never to extremes though. I just really enjoyed one or two glasses of wine. Hubby had wanted me to stop drinking for years but I just don’t want to. I didn’t feel like I needed to. A glass of wine at the end of a day was my way of relaxing. Needless to say, drinking became one of the few things we ever argued about!

But those days are gone. I am now alcohol-free and loving it! The weird thing is, I don’t miss it. Not one but. I am going to be completely honest here and tell you that I did partake in one little glass of port at Christmas time. Oh… I should probably mention the boozy hot chocolate we inadvertently had in the States too! In one of the hotels we stayed in, the waitress promised to bring us a special after dinner hot chocolate. She didn’t tell us it would have alcohol in it though. But when it came, I drank it because I was cold and found it particularly warming. Hubby asked if she could take his back to the kitchen and boil off the alcohol. She took his away and made him one without the tequila! Although I drank it, I wouldn’t want it again.

So what has become my drink of choice? Basically, I am drinking more water. I drink water throughout the day and in the evening, I will treat myself to a tonic – usually with some kind of fruit juice added to it. And I love it! Drinking more water all day long can sometimes be tough though. Silly because I know I need to drink quite a lot of it to stay really healthy and in tip top condition.

So I was delighted to receive a couple of very cool water bottles from The Big Bottle Co. The idea behind these bottles is that each bottle has the capacity to hold approx. two litres of water. Which is the ideal amount we should consume per day. It might seem like a lot but it does go down relatively easy! I know it’ll be even easier when the temperature rises. It’s been very wet and windy here for the past few months so I can’t wait for the weather to improve. Hopefully that will happen be soon!

We did have a couple of nice days last week, which enabled me to finally take some decent photos of the bottles (while doing yoga) around the pool. But it’s gone straight back to grey skies since then. But I’m still drinking my water and using my bottle every day. Hubby has been taking his khaki bottle with him to work every day – which has certainly made it easier for him to continue his uptake of water.

Here’s what The Big Bottle Co says about their bottles:
